SUPPORT FOR ACID
REFLUX (GERD)

Herbal Extracts Plus has developed an herbal blend, called Support for Acid Reflux (GERD), that contains all-natural herbal extracts for effective support for Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease or GERD.  GERD occurs when the lower portion of the esophagus does not close efficiently, thereby enabling stomach contents to leak back into the esophagus.  When this stomach acid contacts the lining of the esophagus, it often causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat, commonly known as heartburn.  GERD can also be the cause dry coughs and bad breath.   Hiatal hernias often contribute to the onset of GERD, along with the use of alcohol, obesity and smoking. GERD can lead to serious complications such as inflammation of the esophagus from stomach acid, causing painful ulcers.

Herbal Ingredient Information: The following information is a brief overview describing each of the above herbal ingredients and what properties each contributes to make up this proprietary blend.

•  Marshmallow Root is an old-time remedy for gastrointestinal disorders, which has been used to strengthen the digestive system, because it contains polysaccharides that apparently form a protective layer on the stomach lining and will lower stomach acids. The herb is frequently used to treat ulcers and colitis. (Click here for more information on Marshmallow Root)

•  Meadowsweet has been regarded by some herbalists as the best plant remedy for hyperacidity and heartburn. It is considered an antacid herb that is said to heal and soothe the digestive tract and strengthen and tone the system. It also helps to control peptic ulcers and gastritis. Unlike synthetic aspirin, Meadowsweet offsets the acidic effects of salicylic acid. Long use of aspirin can lead to gastric ulceration and bleeding, but Meadowsweet does not produce these side effects and is actually a gentle digestive remedy for acidity. (Click here for more information on Meadowsweet)

•  One of Slippery Elm Bark's oldest uses has been as a digestive tonic. Its high mucilage content soothes the inflamed mucous membranes of the stomach and neutralizes excess stomach acids, making it an excellent remedy for the entire digestive system. It is said to soothe stomach irritation and the sore feeling that often follows vomiting. Old time herbalists use it as a remedy for ulcers and gastritis. (Click here for more information on Slippery Elm Bark)

•  Licorice Root is said to be a wonderful support for good digestion and healthy gastrointestinal system. As a demulcent, the herb soothes the mucous membranes and protects the stomach and intestines. It has been known to restrain the secretion of gastric acid by coating it with mucus, reduce the activity of pepsin, and inhibit enzymes that dismantle prostaglandins, which will help the stomach and upper intestine, allowing ulcers to heal more quickly. This activity may also protect the colon and treat ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, gastritis, and peptic ulcer. (Click here for more information on Licorice Root)

•  Fennel Seed has been primarily used to stimulate good digestion. It relaxes the smooth muscle lining of the digestive tract and has helped alleviate acid-stomach, flatulence, food poisoning, motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting. Fennel is an aromatic stimulant that is good for the gastrointestinal tract and relieves abdominal pain, colon disorders, gastrointestinal tract spasms, and also helps to expel gas and ease infant colic. (Click here for more information on Fennel Seed)

•  Aloe Vera Leaf is believed to soothe peptic ulcer inflammation caused by excess acid, aspirin, and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Ingested, Aloe helps to lower cholesterol, increases blood-vessel generation in the lower extremities of people with poor circulation, soothes stomach irritation, and promotes healing. (Click here for more information on Aloe Vera Leaf)

•  Turmeric Root has a long and venerable history as a warming herb that stimulates the digestive tract. Its mild aromatic properties have been used for thousands of years to stop stomach irritation. The exact mechanism is not entirely understood, but modern research confirms that the herb does protect gastric mucosa, helping to ease indigestion and other digestive problems. It is known to reduce intestinal gas formation and acts as a fine carminative, helping to expel intestinal gas. This warming herb is also thought to stimulate the appetite. (Click here for more information on Turmeric Root)

•  Bladderwrack is considered to be a digestive demulcent (soothing agent) and like aloe vera, slippery elm, and marshmallow, has been used to ease reflux and heartburn. It is believed that its algin content forms a gel within the intestines that coats and soothes the intestinal lining. (Click here for more information on Bladderwrack)

•  Chamomile possesses antioxidant and antiseptic qualities. Evidence indicates that its use neutralizes certain germs and prevents infection. This herb is excellent for promoting good digestion and helping the gastro-intestinal canal by soothing inflamed and irritated mucous membranes. (Click here for more information on Chamomile)

•  Corydalis extracts are not only helpful as pain-relief agents, but also may be useful in the treatment of stomach ulcers. Corydalis has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat painful abdominal conditions, as well as spasms and nausea. (Click here for more information on Corydalis)

•  Cayenne is an overall tonic that is said to build up resistance to illness, sore throats, sinus infections and colds. Cayenne is called a carrier or catalyst herb that increases the efficacy of almost every other herb or herbal combination. Cayenne is an overall digestive aid that stimulates the production of gastric juices, clears excess mucus from the stomach, helps to alleviate stomach ulcers from within, improves the appetite, and relieves nausea from seasickness. (Click here for more information on Cayenne)

•  Peppermint promotes good digestion and improves the appetite. Its foremost use as a medicine (in both home remedies and pharmaceutical preparations) is applied to relieve indigestion and the intestinal gas caused by certain foods; hence, its use in after-dinner mints and liqueurs. It relaxes the stomach muscles and promotes burping. Some studies have shown that Peppermint lessens the amount of time food spends in the stomach by stimulating the gastric lining, and because Peppermint increases stomach acidity and stimulates the flow of bile, it helps to digest food before passing into the intestines and colon. Peppermint's antibacterial properties can kill the micro-organisms that may cause food poisoning. (Click here for more information on Peppermint)
