Cnidium Monnier (10% Osthole)

History:

Cnidium Monnier is a warm, bitter and acrid herb, and physically, a very small annual (or perennial) that is native to China, where it may be found growing on field edges, in ditches and waste places in most of the country. It also grows in Korea, Mongolia and Russia and has been introduced to the United States (Oregon) and Europe. A typical Cnidium is round, dark yellow in color and has a pleasant aroma. According to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Cnidium seeds are characterized as acrid bitter and warm. The hardy plant is in flower from May to July, is hermaphrodite (with both male and female organs) and self-fertile. The seeds ripen from July to August, and the plant will survive in light, loamy or clay soils that can be either acid or alkaline.  It has been (and still is) primarily used to support a naturally health sex drive and libido; and traditional Chinese literature often refers to the seed as an aphrodisiac that was used almost routinely in Chinese Imperial formulæ designed specifically for the Emperor. In this regard, it is interesting to note that many civilizations throughout the world have understood that locally-grown plants have been able to provide remarkably healthy results through natural means and often with few side effects. The seeds and fruits of Cnidium Monnier are an important factor in herbal therapy and are available in bulk in many Chinese pharmacies, and the leaves of Cnidium Monnier have been used as a condiment in China. Some of the consitituents found in Cnidium Monnier include coumarins (osthole, imperatorin, bergapten, isopimpinellin and xanthotoxin), glucides and hepatoprotective sesquiterpenes. Two novel biscoumarins (cnidimonal and cnidimarin) and two new coumarin derivatives (5-formylxanthotoxol and 2-deoxymeranzin hydrate) have been isolated from the fruits of Cnidium Monnier, together with fifteen known compounds.

Recommended Dosage:
Take one (1) capsule daily with water and food. Do not take on an empty stomach. Do not exceed recommended dosage.

Contraindications:
Although there are no current definitive warnings listed with the use of Cnidium Monnier Herbal Supplement, it is not advisable for pregnant or nursing women to use this herb unless under the care of a physician. Moreover, since the herb contains coumarins, it is advisable for anyone taking blood-thinning medication to speak with their physicians before using. Use with caution if experiencing kidney or liver problems. Do not combine with fritillaria or Peony Root. The American Herbal Products Association gives Cnidium a Class I rating, which means that it is safe when taken in the recommended doses. There have been reports of nausea, vomiting and muscle contraction or spasticity with the use of this herb. Do not overuse (more than the recommended dosage), as there may be serious toxic effects, i.e., convulsions or effects on seizure threshold; lung or respiration-dyspnea (difficult or labored breathing).
