History:
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic sulfur compound that can be found in plant and animal tissues, including green plants, vegetables, grains, fruit, fish, meats, poultry, eggs, milk and some algae, and it is vital for the maintenance of sound health. Although a member of the sulfur family, MSM should never be confused with sulfa drugs, which may produce allergies in some people. MSM is a metabolite derived from antioxidant dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), which, in itself, is said to have many healthy properties. The compound's therapeutic value appears to come from its ability to transport substances through cell membranes and making the cell wall permeable, allowing water and nutrients to pass into cells and allowing waters and wastes to properly flow out. The building blocks of the body, amino acids, are all sulfur binders and play a major role in a healthy body's activities. Since sulfur's presence is easily destroyed by even moderate processing, including drying or heating, MSM supplements can be beneficial for many people. Because the modern American diet includes much processed food, the MSM content is either not present at all or included only in miniscule amounts, and a constant supply of MSM is needed, since sulfur is one of the essential minerals. MSM's efficacy is thought to work well when taken at the same time as vitamin C.
